Three things; Enyimba vs Nembe City FC

Enyimba put up a brilliant display to neutralize the threat of Nembe City in Aba on Sunday scoring three and conceding none to condemn their visitors to their seventh league defeat this term. Here are three things from the game.

  • They give no favours; no not at home:

Visiting teams know their primary target when coming to Aba is to even get a goal before the dream of winning. Enyimba made history when they went all through last season without conceding a goal at home and since that Match Day 4 loss to State rivals Abia Warriors, Enyimba have not only won every home game since then, they have also not conceded.

In their game against Nembe City, the visitors could not muster a shot on target till towards the end of the game and if you don’t make a shot on target, you are unlikely to score. Skipper Chinedu Udorji said last season’s Spirit has been revived and based on recent performances, one cannot help but agree.

Yes, the true test will be known in the coming days when tougher opposition starts visiting but so far so good, Enyimba is proving that they offer no favours, they gift no goals in Aba.

  • Kaita shows his Class:

Since he was signed by Enyimba FC, former Super Eagles midfielder Sani Kaita has started every game for the side and looking at his performance especially in the 3-0 win over Nembe City; one cannot help but agree that this player oozes class.

His job is to sit just in front of the back four, shielding them from any attack but he does more; always running, always ready to receive the ball, as well as harry and deny opponents any space. Nor does he shy away from joining the attack either as was seen in the last home game against Kaduna United where he scored an absolute beauty.

Against Nembe City FC, he was shrewd with his passes; rarely lost possession and knew when to set off a counter attack. He spotted the run of Bashri Abdulrahman in the 6th minute and sent a perfect diagonal ball that fell right at the feet of the striker. In the second period too, he released goal scorer Mfon Udoh severally even though for some of those chances, the end product was poor.

Such performances have justified the faith Zachary Baraje had in him by plugging him right into the heat of the Glo Nigeria Premier League and guess what? He’s already a darling to the Aba fans too. Kaita was the last to leave the pitch after the Nembe game simply because the fans wouldn’t let him.  Younger players can look at this veteran and learn all they can as he graces the Premier League weekly.

  • Any hope for sorry Nembe?

Another away game, another away loss and another basket of goals conceded; Nembe City must be considering having two goal keepers playing at the same time in an away game.

Firmly rooted at the bottom of the table for several weeks now, Nembe City need a good run of results to be able to breathe better. They have won thrice this season but have lost seven times and they have the largest negative goal difference in the league; -17.

They beat both El Kanemi Warriors and Dolphins 1-0 each in Omoku but on the road, they not only lose, they ship in the goals. They lost 6-0 in Gombe, a hattrick of 3-0 losses to Kaduna United, Rangers International and now Enyimba.

They play good football a times but they must tighten up at the back especially when away from home. In every league, it’s all about the points, isn’t it? But such enormous negative goal difference could haunt a side in the future.
