Good morning Everyone.
Somehow, just somehow, it’s Friday again. I think the week flew by, I think it did. But that’s all in my head because not one of the days of this week was in shortage of the assigned 24 hours. Bottom line though is that it’s Friday and boy have I missed match stories of Enyimbaic football.
Not to worry though, action resumes this weekend and what follows is a break for the League but not necessarily for us. In fact, the business part of our League season starts from here onwards.
First, we play Nasarawa United this Sunday in Umuahia. Ever heard of the term ‘banana skin’? That’s it right there. Then we have three outstanding fixtures which we must clear during the break period. Wikki Tourists, Warri Wolves and Abia Warriors are the three teams we must play during this mid-season break. Then there is the State FA Cup finals with Abia Comets.
But more importantly for us in that mix is our CAF Champions League Group stage draws. The draw of course takes place on Tuesday next week. Eight teams will be packaged into two groups of four each. CAF has told us it’s the last of such grouping, so we all should enjoy/endure it for the very last time this season.
Each group is played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The winners and second placed teams (after each team had faced everyone else both at home and away) of each group advance to the semi-finals. Merely talking about this excites me. Sandwiched in all of this is money that comes in with every victory and the prize money keeps going higher as your performance does too.
Champions win US$1,500,000
Second place US$1,000,000
3rd in group stage US$500,000
4th in group stage US$400,000
If you do the math, calculating with $1 to N199, you have the winners taking home N 298, 500, 000. That’s two hundred and ninety eight million, five hundred thousand Naira only. Sounds like some good money. Factor in the other funds that have come in at the various levels of the competition. Some money here fellas, if you win it.
Anyway, we have seven other teams who will be vying for honours with us on this.
ES Sétif, AS Vita Club, Al-Ahly, Zamalek, ASEC Mimosas, Wydad Casablanca and ZESCO United.
Quite a lot for us to chew on these teams in the days ahead. So watch this space in the next couple of days. Yea I know fans of some other Nigerian clubs will be wondering what in the world we are talking about here, that’s fine. Just sit tight and learn from the Chairmen.
There’s a Friday night game yet again in Enugu tonight and really one I’ll have my eyes on. Rangers take on Heartland in the Oriental Derby and it will be fascinating to see how the teams fare tonight. If you live around Enugu, you should be there. If you don’t, then the game is live on Supersport.
That’s your Friday Morning dose, I’ll be back tomorrow with more.
