Good morning All,
In our lineup of Cup finals, we have yet another one upon us. We play Warri Wolves in a rescheduled fixture at the Warri Township Stadium this evening. Having made it two wins in as many matches albeit it different competitions, the onus lies on us to get a third one in the kitty.
For many, we can’t wait for the season to be over but it is clear that every season has a direct relationship with the one before. If you finished in the Champions League places, you play in the Continent the season following. So to say we need a good finish as a good foundation for the coming year, is stating the very obvious.
There’s also one more point we must bear in mind. Look at Kano Pillars for a bit. Back to back Champions three times in a row. Then they had some issue the season that followed and right now, it has become some insurmountable-looking mountain for them, getting back to winning the League or even landing on the Continent.
In other words, there hardly would be any team that can afford such incredible run anymore. The League title would get more difficult by the day. Every new season would pose new challengers. Last season we had Sunshine and Nasarawa and Wikki and Giwa. This season we have Rangers and FC Ifeanyiubah and Wikki Tourists and Rivers United. Embrace it, its the new trend.
We have come to the end of the lengthy domination of any team. That’s the story and guess what? We are not immune to this new development. In previous years, this stage of the season would have us already in the top places, just looking to nip our opponents to it but here we are, without strong convictions of even winning the title this season.
Warri Wolves themselves typify this issue I’m talking of. Last season’s runners up. Second runner ups the year before that one, right now they are staring relegation in the face. On the look of it, you can have your money that they would be one of the two that will join Ikorodu and Giwa in the NNL next season. That should mean that today’s game should be as intense as they come.
They have had at least three coaches this season including the Dutch guy who left as unceremoniously as he arrived. Some administrative and off the pitch problems mean that the last time out, they lost to FC Ifeanyiubah, a game they played behind closed doors. Its safe to say, they are a troubled side. That said, this would be anything but a stroll in the Park for us.
An away win will hurl us back into serious title contention and it is something not far away from our reach. As always, the choice of personnel for us in this tie will influence the outcome. Wouldn’t it be smart to give some playing time to some members of the squad who have seen terribly little action in the recent past? I mean, why play some players to ‘knackeredness’ when there’s similar quality underplayed?
Anyway, whatever ensures good results today would be welcome. We would have live updates via @EnyimbaEnyi on twitter. I’m also sure the good guys at @LMCNPFL would also have theirs. So you wouldn’t be in doubt as to whats happening at that stadium from 4pm.
Let’s hope its a good outing for us.
