Match Preview: Enyimba vs Wikki Tourists

Good morning all,

This evening at 4pm we play Wikki Tourists in one of our rescheduled fixtures at our adopted home turf of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Pitakwa. It’s a fixture with some significance for both teams- a Wikki Tourists side searching for a first ever League title and our Enyimba team with fledgling hopes of a title.

At the back of (an almost expected) defeat in Makurdi, it’s expedient that we got ourselves back to winning ways and into the thick of things. Evidently the next few weeks would be the toughest fixture wise in that while teams have their midweek to rest some more, we have our schedules packed with outstanding games and of course the other competition we are still alive in.

Wikki Tourists have performed creditably over the past two seasons, you can’t take that away from them. And where they currently are, they have earned. I think they have the best defensive record in the Championship this season, (ermmm unless that 3-0 bashing in Uyo upset that) but the underlying fact is that their inability to give away a lot of goals away from home has helped their upsurge.

Their top marksman Godwin Obaje is currently the highest goal scorer in the League so far this season and that pays credence to how much impact Abdul Makaiba has made in his two years stint at the Bauchi side so far. Of course many have said a thing or two about the unique surface of their turf up North but that’s not our business today. Our business today is to ensure we hurl ourselves back into title relevance.

This fixture last season was one I particularly enjoyed a great deal. Our strikers were on a mini goal drought and Chinedu Udoji bailed us out. A brilliant header and a penalty he scored against his former roommate Paul Godwin sealed a 2-0 win for us. Will there be a repeat? Well, he’s gotta be in the team first for any such possibility.

He asked for a break and he got stints on the bench for back to back games now. Could he have rested enough? Or should Thankgod Ikeh and Emma Anyanwu who have looked assured in my honest opinion in the games they have featured in continue their partnership? Strangely we have rarely seen Anaemena play for sometime, wonder if all is well with him.

The other question mark is what happens in midfield. Kester has also sat out for Razak, will the former Sharks man make a return? In midfield, Oladapo has seen some action lately being shunted out wide in Warri and in his preferred central midfield role vs Akwa United. What happens with him? He continues or does he get swapped for Nzube/Ibenegbu (middle) or Etor/Osadiaye (left)?

I have a feeling we could see a different man in between the sticks. Like I do on football manager 2016, I love to have all of my goalkeepers taste some action once in a while. So maybe we’d see Femi Thomas back in goal, or maybe Moses Ocheje. Strangely enough, no one even makes mention of Joshua Enaholo. It’s amazing.

Well, all that is irrelevant right now. We have an opposition that must be taken down today and whether Emma Anyanwu or Kelly Kester get to score their respective first goals for the club or its Mfon adding to his tally, three points is non negotiable this evening.

Let’s get the job done Gentlemen.

Updates will be at the regular sources via Twitter. @enyimbaenyi and @enyimbafc and @lmcnpfl. Just juggle thru all three and you’d have a picture of what went down at the game.

Till tomorrow.
