Good morning Everyone. This evening we welcome League’s returnees, Gombe United to the UJ Esuene Stadium in our third League fixture this season. Having been pummeled by Plateau United in midweek, we have it all to do as we look to catch up with the leading pack.
It’s only match day three and the only crime this team has realistically committed was to lose an away game. There are concerns of course about the number of goals we conceded and how late we were out of the blocks in Jos but it’s just right that we bury that performance and show with a solid win that midweek was only a blip.
Would this team be performing better had we been playing at home in Aba? No doubt but that said, we shouldn’t struggle to beat a side that’s traveled all that distance from up North to play us. Factor in also the fact that we are well aware of the challenge of this season and that we have to make something happen from Calabar.
The gaffer has quite some selection headache on his hands as this game comes calling. There are a number of players yet to taste some action so far this term but it remains to be seen if midweek’s defeat would force the gaffer’s hand in naming his team for this evening’s clash. You would think though that the stress of the journey should play in his mind, letting him give some time to some fresher legs.
Just like the guest post of yesterday, I’m thinking Ohanachom should get the nod to start this evening. In defense, Anaemena + Oladuntonye had a poor showing in Jos. Would it be time to call in Nelson Ogbonnaya? There also are the likes of Ezekiel Bassey and Christian Obiozor who have not had a bite of the cheery yet this season. I guess one of the reasons why the gaffer is paid, is to solve selection headaches.
Gombe United themselves are tutored by Coach Manu Garba who I have such respect for since his work with Taiwo Awoniyi’s under 20 set. Perhaps they’re not expecting a win but they would be set up nicely to give us as much trouble as possible. Playing in far away Calabar also means they’ll fancy their chances knowing its a neutral ground.
All that notwithstanding, we really don’t have any excuses for anything less than 3 points this evening. Midweek’s poor result means this team needs to redeem itself and its something that can only be done right there on the pitch. It’s a gruesome 35 match days ahead but match day 3’s result has to be three points in the bag for us. No excuses.
Live updates will be on the LMC handle. At the moment, we are looking to enagage someone who lives in Calabar who will run the live blog on Match days for home games. So if you are that someone or you know someone that can do it for us, get in touch with us as soon as possible.
That’s your lot today. Back tomorrow with good news I hope.
